About Toto
The group Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Taking their name from the Latin word meaning "all all-encompassing," the group was intent on exploring every musical style.
In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a complete failure However, they resurface with their fourth album Isolation which contains two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and their tour helped them become a household name all over the world.
After a hiatus of a couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. The album is different from the ballads on previous albums, and features some heavy rock. This album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.
In the course of recording the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and is put in financial difficulty. They decide to record a new album and change their name to an alternative producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band much-needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and goes on a major tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. Toto returned for a benefit concert in 2010 to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. This was the first time that all of the original Toto members had been performing together for over 31 years. In addition to the original members, keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.
