Before the formation of Toto the members of the group did session work for Steely Dan,[3] Seals and Crofts,[4Seals and Crofts,[4] Boz Scaggs and Sonny and Cher. The guitarist Steve Lukather was the band's leader.
About Toto
The band Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also well-known studio musicians who worked with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word meaning "all all-encompassing," the group was intent on exploring every musical style.
The third album from Toto, Turn Back, was an unfulfilling success in 1981. However they made amends with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two songs that were hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour helped them become a household name across the globe.
After a hiatus of a couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. The album is an departure from the ballads of previous albums, and features some heavy rock. This album was their first to go platinum in North America.
In the course of recording the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and is faced with financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and create a new album with the new producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band a much-needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a major tour across the globe. After a few weeks in Europe The band then travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and goes on to record their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band covering their hit Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring group includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest, as well as keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

In 1996, the group came back together to tour and make an album. It was the first time that the original members took to the stage together in over 10 years.
The following year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time that all of Toto's original members were on stage at once. Following this, the band broke up again. Toto came back together for an event benefiting the ALS Foundation in 2010. to raise money for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time that all original Toto members appeared performing together for more than 31 years. In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

Despite their acclaim The group faced a few difficulties in their later years. In 2002 keyboardist David Paich and drummer Greg Phillinganes were forced to take a medical leave of absence. Drummer Shem von Schroeck stepped in, but the band was not the same without Paich and Phillinganes. In 2008, a series of lineup changes as well as a series of disappointing albums led Toto to call it quits for a period of time. The group returned to the road in 2012 after the release of the album 40 Trips Around The Sun.
The album was a return to form for the band and the tour was accompanied by sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was helped by the inclusion of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, both of whom had joined the band.
